Good start man, try not to get bogged down in details early. How you handle what's going on in the background is just as important as the subject.

I agree, good start, I think you tried to force the shapes, Experiment. Remember scale is our friend. Make one or the other HUGE. One mother of a volcano or one giant-ass catherdral. I think that will help with the composition.
