Nice job, awesome composition, believable pose, restrained colors, hints of detail and age. Think you nailed it. My only beef is that the spear looks too clean... not as painterly as the rest. It also looks too small and puny for a warrior of this size and mass.
my only complaint is his right arm. the hand looks awkward holding the weapon. seems with the angle of his forearm, he'd be holding his weapon a bit more vertically.

HAHA thats the same thing I thinking...looks like he holding a tooth pick. I painted in every imaginable weapon and nothing looked right...

did you try angling the weapon downward? i think both the spear and his gaze pointing off the page takes us out of the image.
otherwise, really nice handling within the form, love the gesture and story - don't be afraid to push the lighting
